Is Enola Holmes worth streaming on Netflix?

It is quite cool when you open Netflix and suddenly discover movie that you have never heard of, but that still sounds interesting. That is what I felt as Netflix recommended me the movie Enola Holmes. But, what is it all about? And is Enola Holmes worth streaming on Netflix?

Have you ever heard of Enola Holmes? One week ago, I hadn’t. But, she is the little sister of Mycroft Holmes and Sherlock Holmes, and she didn’t have a perfect childhood. While her brothers are big success stories in their own ways, she is still living at home with her mom, being taught by her mom, and raised entirely by her mom.

But, then one day her mom goes missing and Enola is left behind. What will happen with her? Mycroft wants to send Enola to a boarding school so that Enola can learn manners, while Sherlock doesn’t seem to be entirely convinced about that solution.

Enola on the run

Enola decides to flee the house in order to find out what has really happened to her mom. She takes every little hint she can get and starts her own journey and investigation. Meanwhile, Mycroft tries to catch her to send her to boarding school, while Sherlock is doing his somewhat own investigation, though being very much in the background.

While on the run, Enola meets Tewkesbury, a lord on the fly who runs away from his family. They seem to connect, and in the end, Enola decides to help Tewkesbury discover who really tries to kill him and why.

Sherlock Holmes is played by Henry Cavill, the biggest star of the movie. However, I didn’t think much about his presence, because he is more like a supporting actor in this movie. Millie Bobby Brown plays the role of Enola, and she is actually quite enjoyable. She has a cute face, and whenever she looks into the camera and speaks directly to the viewer, it actually feels kind of cool (not like when you watch Dora and she asks you to clap in order for the snake to run away in animations for kids).

The story wasn’t juicy enough

Even though I enjoyed the movie, I didn’t consider the story to be juicy enough. Whenever Holmes is involved, I expect the movie to be packed with amazing investigative work and conclusions made on leads that nobody else would ever discover. However, this movie lacked in part those amazing (Sherlock) Holmes discoveries, making the story quite flat.

But, even though the story could have been better, I still enjoyed the movie, and I could even have ended up in the cinema to watch it, if it hadn’t been a Netflix original movie.

Will there be an Enola Holmes 2 movie?

To be honest, a new character has been born with this movie, and I could easily imagine an Enola Holmes 2 movie in which she can show her fantastic skills, now being able to work entirely as an investigator, and not spending her time fleeing from Mycroft, Lestrade, and the ones who tried to kill Tewkesbury.

The movie is based on the first book written by Nancy Springer in her series about Enola Holmes. This is the first of six books, meaning that there is more than enough material for Netflix to continue the story.

The first book was titled “The Case of the Missing Marquess,” while the remaining five books are titled:

  • The Case of the Left-Handed Lady
  • The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets
  • The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan
  • The Case of the Cryptic Crinoline
  • The Case of the Gypsy Goodbye

What do you think? Would you like to see some more Enola Holmes movies on Netflix in the future? I would be happy to see some follow up movies!
